Kevin Gaines is a historian and academic who serves as the Julian Bond Professor of Civil Rights and Social Justice at the University of Virginia (UVA). He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1992 and has since held various academic positions at different institutions, including Cornell University and the University of Michigan.
Gaines is known for his research and publications on race and politics in the United States, particularly in the context of the civil rights movement and the black power movement. He has written books such as "American Africans in Ghana: Black Expatriates and the Civil Rights Era" and "Uplifting the Race: Black Leadership, Politics, and Culture in the Twentieth Century."
In addition to his scholarly work, Gaines has also been involved in various initiatives and programs related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. At UVA, he has been a vocal advocate for increasing diversity among faculty and students and has helped establish initiatives such as the Carter G. Woodson Institute for African-American and African Studies.
